A Great Day to Garden

We have worked hard today to get in our garden and herbs and flowers... rain is forecast tonight and tomorrow so this is a great day to get stuff into the soil! Miss J was my side-kick today and helped me plant for many hours!

In our garden beds, we planted Californian Red Onion, Brown Onions, Viking Spinach, Rainbow Chard Silverbeet, Sweet Mixed Capsicum, Sweet Potato, Cherokee Wax Butter Beans, Brown Beauty Dwarf Beans, Blackjack Zucchini, Mighty Red Tomatoes, Cauliflower, Green Dragon Broccoli, Orange Carrots, Purple Carrots, Crystal Apple Cucumber and Lebanese Cucumber.

In our planters, we planted Mixed Lettuces, Baby Spinach, Lemon Grass, Curry, Rosemary, Thyme, Lemon Thyme, Red Legs Spring Onions, Straight Leaf Spring Onions, Chives, Garlic Chives, Lemon Basil, Sweet Basil, Thai Basil, Oregano, Sage, Parsley, Italian Parsley, Blue Bantam Dwarf Peas, Sugar Snap Peas, Oregon Dwarf Snow Peas (these last 3 are getting free-reign over the decking wires!).

We also planted some "Impatients" and Petunias and other pretty flowers.

After all that work, we needed a good dinner! We had fettuccine with a red onion, bacon, garlic & pesto cream sauce topped with slow-roasted cherry tomatoes, kumura, snow peas & pan-seared FR chicken and served with an oven-fresh spelt sourdough loaf!

Roast Chicken with Lemon and Sage

A super-exciting day of errands and jobs, but we did spent a significant amount of time at the local nursery picking out some seeds and seedlings for our new garden, some herbs for the planters and some flowers to make a house feel like a home. Planting will begin in the morning. All hands will be required on deck. Please make sure you arrive promptly at sun-up. :)

Dinner tonight was a roasted lemon and sage FR chook and vegies, served with slow-roasted corn cobs, pumpkin and potato... Delicious!

Valentines Traditions

Another week dawns and Valentines Day arrives...

We don't have any plans to escape without kids this year so will have a big special family dinner together (Roast Lamb & Vegies). However, there is one tradition that cannot be messed with. Apple Pie. You heard me right, apple pie marks some significant occassions in our lives. Tradition is that Craig makes me an apple pie for our anniversary in June, but we also celebrate Valentines Day as it is the day we first started 'going out' (I know... I know...) and I get to make the apple pie to celebrate that day! (Having said that, we like apple pies so much we make them as often as seems reasonable, but these two days MUST be marked with apple pies!)

So - I made another apple pie (yes, I made one yesterday to take to the Masters' house!) for dessert tonight and we enjoyed it on the deck with homemade vanilla bean ice-cream and a cuppa. Delightful.

Happy Valentines Day to My Darling Heart... <3

Bread and Jam

We got stuck into domestic stuff today - fresh sourdough spelt bread and homemade jam! We made 2 kinds of naturally-sweetened jam today using this recipe - raspberry & pomegranate and apricot & pear. How glorious to enjoy FRESH jam on FRESH bread... ah... this is what Fridays are for. :)

And to top off our comfort food theme: lasagna for dinner with homemade garlic bread and salad. And for dessert? Fresh bread and jam, of course!

Portuguese Chicken with Chorizo, Vegies & Brown Rice

Portuguese Chicken with Chorizo, Vegies & Brown Rice

We have been drooling over the new "Travelling with Thermomix" cookbook and decided to try a lovely sounding recipe tonight (pg 54) but then had to search our town high and low to find a good spicy chorizo sausage. At last, we ended up where we should've gone first - to Craig's favourite butcher. They had one spicy chorizo left in the shop and we took it! :) Of course, we adapted the recipe a bit to suit our liking and it was inhaled in short order after it came out of the oven! We will be cooking this one again! :)
(Apologies about the photo - the camera's battery had died and I had to resort to a phone camera!)

We finished off our lovely dinner with another recipe out of the cookbook mentioned above - Pumpkin-Apple Cake with Oat Flakes on pg 98 - with, of course, some adaptations... :) Amanada had already introduced us to this recipe before we moved and I knew it was a sure-fire winner!
